SDU – Sanata Dharma University (SDU) assigned six students and one faculty companion to participate in the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in Asia Pacific (AJCU-AP) Service Learning Program (SLP) 2025 at Ateneo de Naga University, Naga City, Philippines, on August 2-16, 2025.

This program, themed “One with Nature,” brought together students from eight institutions spread across five countries. The USD delegation consisted of Rafael Nugroho Putra Susanto (English Letters), Sebastianus Gaga Bani (English Letters), Edward Vito Brata Yuwana (Informatics), Gabriela Selomita Rumondor (Mathematics Education), Aileen Komala Widjaja (Psychology), Gabriel Yohan Enggalim Kobak (Pharmacy), and Intan Putri Hapsari as the faculty companion from the Biology Education Study Program.

Cross-Cultural Experience
This program invited participants to encounter cross-cultural experiences while deepening their social, spiritual, and environmental awareness. Participants came from Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, Thailand, and Timor Leste.

“Feelings of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty instantly disappeared when we were all united by a sense of warmth, curiosity, and a desire to get to know one another,” said Rafael Susanto, recounting his initial experience meeting delegates from other countries during lunch at Short Highland Park.

Immersion and Conservation Activities
Immersion activities that required participants to stay with local families in Balatasan and Punta Tarawal provided valuable lessons about the simplicity of life. Gabriel Yohan remembered the warm welcome from residents who were able to smile and be warm despite their simple lives.

“They are still able to smile, remain friendly, and be warm despite living in simplicity,” said Gabriel Yohan. The program also involved direct conservation activities such as “Forest in Our Midst/Tree Nurturing” and “Mangrove Planting.” Rafael wrote a reflection on his experience planting mangroves for the first time abroad, which made him determined to continue similar actions in Indonesia.

A Moment of Reflection in Nature
The visit to Malabsay Falls was one of the most memorable moments. Edward Vito wrote about his experience, “Felt like being hugged by nature… We seemed so small compared to the fall,” reminding us of humanity’s place as part of nature, not its ruler.

Aileen Komala Widjaja also found peace in the spacious grounds of the Sacred Heart Formation Center, where participants stayed. “After the activities were over, I was able to walk around the monastery while enjoying the fresh air and tranquility of the surroundings,” she said.

Personal Transformation

Sebastianus Gaga Bani considered SLP to be an “inner journey” that has made him more sensitive to the voices of nature and his fellow human beings. “For me, SLP is not just a community service program, but an inner journey that has shaped a new awareness that nature is not something outside of myself, but a part of myself,” he said.

Gabriela Selomita Rumondor felt an energy that made her feel relieved. “Activities like SLP make me feel energized, and the waterfall invites me to love deeply and be grateful for everything,” she said.

The AJCU-AP Service Learning Program 2025 not only provided academic experiences but also served as a means of character development and environmental awareness for participants. Each delegate returned home with hope, new friendships, and a renewed commitment to living in harmony with nature.

USD – Sanata Dharma University has once again opened its doors to international students by accepting six new students for the 2025 Kemitraan Negara Berkembang (KNB) scholarship program. The students come from five countries: Bangladesh, Madagascar, Egypt, Tanzania, and Pakistan.

The six students arrived in Indonesia on Sunday (August 24, 2025) and attended a national orientation at Swissôtel Jakarta the following day. The event, organized by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, was attended by all KNB scholarship awardees from across Indonesia, along with representatives from the International Office of each university.

Three students, Rafanomezantsoa Anjara Nomena (Madagascar), Sadaf Fatima (Pakistan), and Lamia Hannan Sneha (Bangladesh), will pursue a Bachelor of Management program. Meanwhile, Cazimiry Boniphace Masasila (Tanzania) and Mohamed Saied Sayed Ahmed Mahmoud (Egypt) will enroll in a Master of Management program. Arooba Kishwar (Pakistan) has chosen the Master of English Language Education program.

The Head of the International Office (BKHI) of Sanata Dharma University, Yurisdixta Menavia, who accompanied the students, explained that there is a preparation period for these international students.

“Before entering their chosen study programs, all students will take a one-year Indonesian Language Program for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) at the USD Language Institute to strengthen their Indonesian language skills,” she said.

After they arrived in Yogyakarta (August 26, 2025), the students attended a local orientation organized by BKHI on Wednesday (August 27, 2025) in the Personnel Bureau Meeting Room. The orientation covered an introduction to Indonesia and Yogyakarta, local ethics and traditions, tourist attractions, traditional foods, academic regulations, and campus life.

The activity continued with a tour of Campuses 1 and 2 to introduce the available facilities, including the library at Campus 2 and how to access its book collection. Mohamed Saied, who is quite fluent in Indonesian, expressed his enthusiasm.

“I can’t wait to explore Yogyakarta because Indonesia is famous for its many beautiful tourist attractions. I also learned Indonesian before enrolling,” he said.

Meanwhile, Cazimiry also appreciated the facilities at the USD campus.

“The campus is so big and complete, I think I might get lost at first,” he said.

Six Students as Delegates of USD Participate in Global Leadership Program 2025: Ready to Become Visionary Leaders in Addressing Educational and Social Issues https://unit./en/2025/09/03/sanata-dharma-university-holds-phase-2-of-whole-person-education-2025-program-for-holistic-educator-development-cloned-7775/ Wed, 03 Sep 2025 08:26:56 +0000 https://unit./en/?p=7788

Six Students as Delegates of USD Participate in Global Leadership Program 2025: Ready to Become Visionary Leaders in Addressing Educational and Social Issues

Global Leadership Program (GLP) is an annual program organized by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in Asia Pacific (AJCU-AP) that aims to discuss and deliberate on global issues. This program provided opportunities for student delegates to discuss global issues from their respective countries and exchange insights to solve these issues within a global context.

GLP 2025 was held at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, from August 3 to 9, 2025, carrying the theme “Education and Cross-border Cooperation for Sustainable Development.” This main theme was divided into three sub-themes, namely Education for Sustainable Development in Basic Education, Inclusive Education for Students with Different Background, Cross-Border Cooperation in Higher Education. This year’s theme was chosen as an important step toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aimed to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and provide lifelong learning opportunities for all.

10 universities with a total of 40 participants and 10 mentors from each university participated in this year’s GLP. The universities participating in GLP 2025 were Sophia University as the host, Sanata Dharma University, Ateneo de Manila University, Ateneo de Davao University, Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Fu Jen Catholic University, Ricci Hall (The University of Hong Kong), Instituto São João de Brito, Xavier Learning Community, and Sogang University.

In this one-week program, the delegates participated in lecture sessions and conferences, and were also invited to visit places that promoted the SDGs, namely JICA (Japan International Corporate Agency). After that, we were also allowed to join a campus tour guided directly by student delegates from Sophia University. In this tour, they showed Sophia University’s commitment to the principles of the SDGs. For example, the campus used cushions for sofas that were made from recycled materials and had multifunctional outdoor student gathering spaces that could even be used as emergency cooking facilities. Not only that, each sub-theme was equipped with various educational activities, such as site visits to locations that opened up many learning opportunities for the delegates. These included UNU (United Nations University), Ina Gakuen Junior High School, and one inclusive elementary school in the city of Hadano, namely Honcho Elementary School.

The delegates were also introduced to traditional Japanese culture, namely the tea ceremony, which not only introduced the Japanese way of serving tea to guests, but also included tea and snack exchanges. This was intended to promote inclusivity and bonding among delegates from different universities.

In GLP 2025, USD sent six delegates to gain deeper insights into the sub-theme and to develop their leadership in supporting sustainability. The delegates were Eveline (Management), Maria Diva Rossary (Pharmacy), and four Psychology students: Alexander Aldo, Hillary Bestari Setyawijaya, Muhamad Raditya Ardianto, and Paramita Wiriyani. They were accompanied by a faculty member as chaperone, Aji Cahyo Baskoro, S.S., M.A., from the History Department.

In this program, delegates from each institution delivered presentations prepared in advance from their respective countries, in line with the theme of GLP 2025. In addition, they represented their home countries through a variety of activities such as performances and cultural showcases, including traditional dances, short dramas, games, songs, food sharing, and local snacks, et ceteras.

There are also impressions and messages from some of our friends from other universities who expressed their gratitude and inspiration after participating in the 2025 Global Leadership Program, such as one of the delegates from Fu Jen University, named Poleon, who shared his experiences and feelings.

“I obtained lots of insights about ESD. For example, when I visited Ina Gakuen Junior High School, they allow students and teachers to make their own curriculum together. That is, students can choose to learn what they’re most interested in. It’s really different from the ordinary curriculum, which only teaches are allowed to create what will be taught in class. And there was one event that made me so impressed. They played a game called global trade game, which students were distributed to different resources. They need to use their own resources to gain the most turnover through trade with other groups. This event made them realize even though you’re a small country and you don’t have a large amount of resources. You still can benefit from it. That evoked me to want to implement the same game for my students. All in all, I feel really grateful that 2025 GLP can be held. It’s what an immersive learning should be.”

Subsequently, a delegate from Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Mr. Yong, conveyed the insights he had acquired through the program.

“The 15th Global Leadership Program gave me more than I ever expected—it opened my eyes to new perspectives, built friendships, and reminded me of the responsibility that comes with leadership. Listening to the stories of my co-delegates from across the world made me realize how deeply connected we all are, and how the Sustainable Development Goals are not just abstract ideas but lived realities that shape people’s lives every day. I came home humbled by the scale of the challenges we face, yet hopeful, because I witnessed how collective action and simple acts of empathy can spark real change. What I carry with me now is not only the knowledge we shared, but the sense of connection and responsibility that comes from knowing we’re all working toward the same dream. More than anything, this experience left me inspired to keep going—bringing forward what I’ve learned into the work I do and the choices I make.”

Continuing from the reflections shared earlier, here is the impression and experience expressed by Nahee, one of the delegates representing Sogang University, South Korea.

“GLP was honestly one of the most inspiring programs I’ve ever joined. Through the lectures, fieldwork, and team projects, I was able to deepen my understanding of sustainable education—not just in theory, but in real, practical contexts across different countries.

But more than that, what I truly gained was the connection with amazing people from all around the world. Living and learning together with such diverse and passionate students opened my eyes to so many new perspectives, and I felt a strong sense of global solidarity.

Although there were some challenges—such as the heat or packed schedules—I genuinely enjoyed every moment. It was a meaningful, eye-opening, and heartwarming experience that I’ll never forget. I’m really grateful to have been part of it, and especially thankful for the friendships we made along the way.”

From these experiences, the delegates of Sanata Dharma University gained a deeper understanding of the importance of supporting sustainable development efforts and, at the same time, learn to become global leaders who can nurture and empower others.

So, if you want to get those experiences, join GLP 2026! See you!

Sanata Dharma University Holds Phase 2 of Whole Person Education 2025 Program for Holistic Educator Development https://unit./en/2025/08/06/sanata-dharma-university-initiates-phase-1-of-whole-person-education-2025-program-for-holistic-educator-development-cloned-7766/ Wed, 06 Aug 2025 03:32:18 +0000 https://unit./en/?p=7775

Sanata Dharma University Holds Phase 2 of Whole Person Education 2025 Program for Holistic Educator Development

Yogyakarta – Sanata Dharma University (USD), in collaboration with the United Board (UB), held the Whole Person Education (WPE) 2025 program themed “On Being a Holistic Educator: Capacity Building for Academic Leaders,” aimed at lecturers from various higher education institutions across Indonesia. This program addresses the need for a structured and holistic career development system for educators. A Focus Group Discussion (FGD) with representatives from Weetebula Catholic University, Triatma Mulya University, and Artha Wacana Christian University revealed that many universities lack systematic career development programs, particularly in non-academic aspects such as integrating core university values and encouraging student character development.

WPE 2025 encompasses five dimensions of development: intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual/moral, and physical. The program aims to cultivate educators who are not only academically competent but also well-rounded individuals. A total of 27 lecturers from nine universities are participating, including Dhyana Pura University, Triatma Mulya University, STKIP Weetebula, Saint Augustine Hippo Catholic University, Soe Education Institute, Flores Bajawa College of Agriculture, Ledalero Institute of Philosophy and Creative Technology, Fatima Pare-Pare College of Health Sciences, and Halmahera University.

Following Phase 1, which took place online from May 26 to June 20, 2025, participants were invited to deepen their understanding of the Whole Person Education concept in Phase 2. This phase occurred from July 7-12, 2025, at USD’s Mrican Campus. The event began with an opening ceremony featuring remarks from Dr. Hope Antone, Program Director of Faculty Development at the United Board, and Prof. Ir. Sudi Mungkasi, Vice Rector for Academic Affairs at Sanata Dharma University.

During Phase 2, participants received a variety of materials and examples of best practices, covering topics such as the introduction to the WPE concept, holistic education, educator spirituality, holistic educational practices in learning and student formation, integration of service learning and research in education, and action plan development workshops. Participants provided positive feedback on the WPE 2025 program. “I feel that WPE truly offers new insights that are very relevant to my responsibilities as a lecturer, and the facilitators provided excellent explanations. I am very happy to participate in this WPE 2025 activity,” said Efrika Siboro, M.Pd., a participant from Saint Augustine Hippo Catholic University. Kristoforus Dowa Bili, S.Pd., M.Pd., a participant from Weetebula Catholic University, also expressed, “The organizing committee at Sanata Dharma University conducted the WPE 2025 program very well, and we are very satisfied with the services and facilities provided for participants.”

At the end of Phase 2, participants were also asked to implement the action plans they had designed for their institutions and classroom activities. The implementation of these action plans will be evaluated and reflected upon during the WPE 2025 Phase 3, which will be conducted online in October 2025.

The WPE 2025 program reflects USD’s commitment as a Jesuit university to share best practices in holistic educator development, based on the successful experience of the Career Development Program that has been conducted thus far. The WPE organizing committee, consisting of Caecilia Tutyandari, Ph.D., Dr. Hongki Julie, M.Si., Monica Eviandaru Madyaningrum, Ph.D., Thomas Wahyu Prabowo Mukti, M.Pd., Yoanni Maria Lauda Feroniasanti, M.Si., Aurelia Melinda Nisita Wardhani, M.Sc., and Albertus Agung Sanjaya, S.Pd., hopes that this program will serve as an investment in the development of well-rounded individuals who can contribute positively to their families, communities, and the nation.

KNB Students visiting International Office of Sanata Dharma University

Held in the Biro Personalia Meeting room, the orientation was delivered by Yurisdixta Menavia, the Head of the International Office and Caecilia Tutyandari, PhD the Vice Rector IV, who also delivered her regards and good impression of the KNB students. This orientation also covered important things about the university, and immigration, as well as the daily etiquette and customs of living in Indonesia, especially in Yogyakarta. The students are also introduced to the campus facilities through a short campus tour around the first and second campuses of Sanata Dharma University.

The students shared their enthusiasm toward the program and are excited to study in Sanata Dharma. “I am very happy to be here and feel very excited because I love Yogyakarta. I also enjoy adventure, so I look forward to exploring more of Indonesia in the future, and I chose to study here because I like the program so much that I follow all the social media of USD to get more information” said Mitzel. Some of them are already partially fluent in Bahasa through online BIPA courses.

Asad mentioned that he chose Sanata Dharma for his lecturer’s recommendation. While Tavonga also mentioned similar things, he also shared that he took to study Informatics because of the underdevelopment of technology in his home country. On the other hand, Cassio also expressed his good impression “I chose USD because I am very interested in the program, especially in Cultural Studies, where I can learn about culture in general, Indonesian culture, popular art, and so on. Since I was studying literature for my bachelor’s degree, I  think it suits me perfectly.” Interestingly in Natalia’s case, she already took English as her major previously and she wants to study further through English Studies (KBI).

Six Students of USD Participated in the 2024 Service Learning Program at Ateneo de Davao University, Philippines

After successfully sending 6 students as delegates for the 2023 SLP, this year USD is once again sending its top students to participate in the Service Learning Program (SLP) organized by AJCU-AP (Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities in Asia Pacific). This program aims to provide learning experiences while serving communities, and in 2024, SLP will be held from August 4-18, 2024, at Ateneo de Davao University, Davao City, Philippines. The theme for this year’s program is Democracy under Siege: An AJCU-AP Service Learning on Democratic Decay and Resilience.

This year, USD is sending 6 student delegates from various study programs to participate in the SLP in the Philippines. The selected delegates are Skolastika Puella Donata and Rifqi Muammar Hanif from the English Literature program, Maria Esterlita Beto from the Biology Education program, Faustina Sakshi Marganingsih from the English Education program, and Stefani Setialie and Chatarina Hikari from the Pharmacy program. The delegates are accompanied by Agatha Mahardika Anugrayuning, a lecturer from the Mechatronics Engineering Technology study program, during the event.

The delegates expressed their enthusiasm and pride after participating in the program as delegates. One of the delegates, Rifqi Muammar Hanif, said that being part of an international program like SLP is a great opportunity to broaden horizons and gain valuable experience working with international communities. “I am grateful to have learned a lot from the local communities and delegates from other countries, and I hope to make a meaningful contribution to society through this program,” he said.

Additionally, Faustina Sakshi also shared her excitement after participating in the program. “SLP 2024 has been a brand new experience for me. From orientation to field activities, there was a mixture of fear and excitement when working with new friends in this program.”

Additionally, Faustina Sakshi also expressed her joy after participating in the program. “SLP 2024 has been a completely new experience for me. From orientation to field activities, there was a mix of fear and excitement as I had to work with new friends in this program.”

In addition to participating in various beneficial activities, the delegates also had the opportunity to take part in the democracy fair on the sixth day. This event offered perspectives from different groups, including environmental conservation issues, which are of interest to one of the delegates, Maria Esterlita Beto. “This activity provided new insights, especially on the importance of environmental preservation, which aligns with this year’s SLP theme,” said Lita. On the other hand, the social night activity also became an important moment that strengthened the relationships among the delegates. The team from Indonesia had the chance to perform on stage, singing the song “Sayang,” which received a warm response from the other participants. The 2024 SLP program provided the delegates with opportunities to introduce their culture and university, participate in various field visits, and engage in joint reflection sessions. By participating in this program, the delegates not only strengthened their sense of solidarity and social responsibility but also made a positive impact on the community, while bringing pride to Universitas Sanata Dharma and Indonesia on the international stage.
